Raise your hand if you’ve ever ordered the “healthy” option and felt your stomach growling again an hour later. 🙋‍♀️ Been there, so many times.

For years I blamed my willpower. Turns out I just wasn’t eating enough protein, and it’s the one thing that actually keeps a girl full.

It’s a PROTEIN problem! 🥚

Once I got serious about protein, everything got easier. The cravings got quieter, I recovered from workouts faster, and the pantry raids stopped.

So today I’m sharing my simple rule. No macro math degree required, promise. 🙂

My Simple Rule For How Much Protein You Need

Here’s the rule of thumb I follow and it has never let me down: a palm-sized portion of protein at every single meal. That’s it. That’s the rule.

If you like numbers better, think roughly 20 to 30 grams of protein per meal, three to four times a day. I don’t weigh my food like a lab experiment. I just check in with my plate.

Aim for protein at EVERY meal, girls! 💪

On days I train, I make a point of getting some protein in within an hour or so after my workout. A couple of eggs, Greek yogurt with berries, or a chicken wrap all do the job. Nothing fancy.

Do taller or more active girls need more? Yep. If you’re lifting heavy or training most days, lean toward the higher end of that range. If you’re smaller or just getting started, the lower end is plenty to feel a real difference.

And please don’t chase a perfect number every single day. What counts is being consistent across the whole week.

5 Signs You’re Not Eating Enough Protein

I ignored these for YEARS. See if any of them sound familiar.

  • You’re hungry again an hour after eating. Carbs alone burn off fast, and protein is what keeps you satisfied until the next meal.
  • Cravings get LOUD. Mine always spiked in the evening on days my breakfast was toast and jam.
  • You’re sore for days. One tough workout leaving me wrecked for a week was my biggest clue that my muscles weren’t getting what they needed.
  • Your hair and nails feel meh. Mine got noticeably stronger once I stopped running on coffee and crackers.
  • Your energy crashes mid-afternoon. The 3 p.m. slump got way quieter once every meal had a real protein source in it.

My Go-To High Protein Foods

Once I stopped guessing and just kept these on rotation, hitting my protein got almost boring. In the best way possible.

  • Eggs. The breakfast MVP. Two eggs with a slice of whole grain toast keeps me full till lunch.
  • Greek yogurt. It packs roughly double the protein of regular yogurt. Add berries and it honestly feels like dessert.
  • Chicken breast. The meal prep queen. I cook a batch on Sunday and it saves my busiest weekdays.
  • Canned tuna or salmon. Pantry gold! I mix it with a spoonful of yogurt instead of mayo and pile it on crackers.
  • Cottage cheese. I was skeptical too. Then I tried it with pineapple and now I get the hype, girls.
  • Lentils and beans. Cheap, filling, and they bring fiber along for the ride.

Easy Ways To Get More Protein Every Day

This is where most girls trip up. You don’t need a bodybuilder meal plan. You just need a few go-to moves you can repeat on autopilot.

  • Upgrade breakfast: eggs, Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese instead of plain toast.
  • Keep 2 or 3 ready proteins in the fridge: rotisserie chicken, canned tuna, boiled eggs.
  • Throw beans or lentils into soups, salads, and tacos. Cheap, filling, and they count!
  • Build your dinner plate with protein first, then add the carbs around it.

None of this is fancy, girls. It’s just having a plan so 6 p.m. you isn’t making decisions with a growling stomach.

But Won’t Protein Make Me Bulky?

Girls, I get this question ALL the time, and I used to worry about it too. Here’s my honest answer after years of lifting and eating this way: no.

Getting bulky takes years of dedicated training and eating in a big surplus. What eating enough protein actually did for me was look more toned, feel stronger, and quit snacking on everything after dinner.

Protein Questions Girls Always Ask Me

Can you eat too much protein?

For most healthy women, hitting a solid protein target at every meal is nowhere near too much. If you have kidney issues or any medical condition, talk to your doctor before making big changes. I’m your internet big sis, not your physician.

Do I need protein powder?

Nope! It’s just convenient. I keep one on hand for crazy mornings, but real food covers my days. If you enjoy a shake, great. If you don’t, you’re not missing anything magical.

When’s the best time to eat protein?

Spread it across the day. Breakfast is the meal most girls skip it at, and it’s the one that sets up your whole afternoon. If you work out in the morning, get something with protein in within an hour or two after. It doesn’t have to be a shake the second you put the dumbbells down.

Now It’s Your Turn!

Don’t overhaul everything tomorrow. Pick ONE meal, and breakfast is honestly the easiest win. Make sure it has a real protein source this week, then build from there, one plate at a time.

Your future self, the one who isn’t starving at 10 a.m., says thank you. 💛

Till next time, babe! xo, Monica
