It’s 6 AM, my coffee table is pushed against the wall, and my whole gym is rolling out of a basket. Yep, that basket.
Girls, I’ve been training in small apartments for years, and I’ve made every dumb equipment mistake there is. So today I’m saving you the money.
Want a home gym that fits a small space and a small budget? Then this guide is for you.
Five things, one basket, zero bulky machines. 🧺
And honestly, three of them cost less than a night of takeout. I wish someone had told me that ten years ago.
My Home Gym Story: From Cluttered To Compact
Ten years ago I lived in a flat so small my yoga mat barely fit between the couch and the TV.
So of course I bought a huge treadmill from a guy online. Ugh, it ate half the room and became the most expensive clothes hanger I’ve ever owned.
The turning point was a rainy week when I couldn’t get to the gym, so I trained with one kettlebell in the gap between the couch and the coffee table. That day I stopped making excuses and started making a list.
I’ve trained in my tiny living room for years with equipment that fits on one shelf, and my legs and booty have never complained. So before you spend a single cent, learn from my wallet.

The 5 Best Pieces Of Home Gym Equipment For Small Spaces
Here’s my tested list, girls, from ‘buy this first’ to ‘lovely extra’. Quality over quantity, always.
1. Adjustable Dumbbells
If you buy only one thing ever, make it a pair of adjustable dumbbells.
Adjustable dumbbells are the best home gym investment, period. My pair goes from 2 to 20 kilos and replaces an entire rack.
As you get stronger you just click on more weight, so your muscles never get bored. Mine have survived two apartment moves and one very angry cat. 💪
They also make weighted ab moves possible, so head on to my abs guide once yours arrive.
2. One Heavy Kettlebell
One bell, one handle, endless workouts. Swings, goblet squats, rows, deadlifts, my beloved sumo squats.
My 8-kilo kettlebell lives next to the couch, and I grab it for a few swings while dinner is in the oven. It takes up as much floor as a big flowerpot.
Go heavier than you think for swings, or you’ll outgrow the bell in a month. Buying too light is the one mistake I’ve made twice.
3. Resistance Bands: Long Ones And Minis
A set of long loop bands plus mini bands costs less than a pizza night, and the whole pile fits in a drawer. ✨
Bands are perfect for glute work, warm-ups and travel, and they give your muscles a completely different kind of burn. I loop a mini band above my knees during glute bridges and my booty screams.
Every single time.
4. A Thick Exercise Mat
Your knees and your downstairs neighbor will both thank you. Get one thick enough to protect your back during floor work.
Mine lives rolled up behind the door. It’s my stretch space, my ab space and, on leg days, my lying-on-the-floor-recovering space. 🙌
5. Gliding Discs (Or Paper Plates!)
Gliding discs are the most underrated small-space tool ever. They turn any floor into a lunging, sliding core machine.
Lunge slides, mountain climbers, pike slides: suddenly your carpet has a job. On hardwood floors, a couple of paper plates literally work.
My tiny gym shopping list, girls:
- Adjustable dumbbells
- One kettlebell
- Long bands + mini bands
- Thick mat
- Gliding discs
What To Skip: Save Your Money And Your Floor
Now the part where I keep you from repeating my mistakes.
Bulky machines don’t belong in small spaces, and I have the treadmill graveyard to prove it. That includes the vibrating belt thingies and anything called an ‘ab lounger’.
If it needs a plug, a manual and a spare room, skip it. 😤 A girl with a mat and a plan gets more done than a girl with a machine she’s scared of.
You can skip the big bench too. The floor, your mat and a sturdy step stool cover everything a bench does in a small home.
If walking is your thing, you don’t need a machine for it either. Lace up, open the door, or follow along with a walking video right on your mat.

Small-Space Storage Tricks That Keep Me Sane
A home gym only works in a small space if it disappears when you’re done. Everything has to fit somewhere, right?
My whole setup goes into one big woven basket: dumbbells flat on the bottom, kettlebell in the corner, bands in a little pouch.
The mini bands hang on an over-the-door shoe organizer, the discs slide under the couch, and the mat stands behind the door.
Think vertical, girls. Hooks behind a door and a shelf above the coat rack turn dead wall into gym storage.
When guests come over, my gym is gone in two minutes. Nobody ever knows.
How To Use It All: My Weekly Setup
Gear alone never changed anyone’s body, and even the NHS recommends strength exercises at least twice a week. Five quiet pieces can cover all of that and more.
I plan my week so everything gets love: lower body with dumbbells and the bell, upper body with bands, core with the discs. If you’ve never planned a training week, start with my fitness planning guide and free monthly planner.
And remember, there’s no spot training in fitness, so work on your body as a whole piece. If you’re chasing a trim middle, my guide on how to get a smaller waist breaks it all down.
Consistency beats fancy equipment, every single time. A girl with one kettlebell and a plan will always out-train a girl with a showroom. 🏋️♀️
Questions Girls Ask Me About Small Home Gyms
Can I really build muscle with just dumbbells and bands?
Yes girl, absolutely. My booty was built on dumbbell squats, hip thrusts and mini band burnouts in a living room the size of a parking spot.
How much does a small home gym cost?
Way less than you think. My whole setup cost less than three months of a gym membership, and it never closes, never queues and never judges. Dumbbells first, cute extras last.
Where should a beginner start?
Start with a mat, one pair of adjustable dumbbells and a set of mini bands. Add the rest only when you know you’ll actually use it. There’s no rule that says a home gym has to be finished on day one.
Now It’s Your Turn!
So that’s my small-space home gym, girls: five quiet pieces, one basket, zero excuses and a body that keeps changing.
You don’t need a spare room or a big budget. You need a corner, a plan and the will to show up for yourself.
Now go set up that basket, roll out your mat and start today.
Till next time, babe! xo, Monica
