Okay, confession time: for years I was a two-sips-of-water-a-day girl. Coffee, though? I never once forgot my coffee.

My head hurt by 3pm, my energy crashed mid-workout, and I kept blaming everything but the obvious. The fix was literally sitting in my kitchen.

If drinking more water feels like a chore, I see you. These are the 8 habits that finally turned me into a girl who hydrates on autopilot.

Spoiler: it was never about willpower! 💧

Start with ONE of these and let it settle for a week. That is exactly how mine stuck, habit by habit.

1. Water Before Coffee, Every Single Morning

My rule is one full glass before any coffee touches my lips. I keep a glass on the counter the night before, so the morning version of me has zero excuses.

Here is why this one is non-negotiable for me. After seven hours of sleep your body is genuinely parched, and coffee on a dry tank always left me jittery and headachy.

That first glass wakes me up better than my espresso shot, and my morning workouts feel so much lighter. If you want a whole routine around this, my fit girl morning habits post is where I keep all of them.

2. Get A Bottle You Actually Like Carrying

Sound silly? It is not. I resisted this for years, then bought a bottle with a straw and my intake quietly doubled.

Girls, the bottle matters more than the plan. I break down exactly what worked for me in my honest water bottle review.

My other trick is owning three cheap bottles and scattering them through my day. One lives in my gym bag, one on my desk, one in the car, so water is always within arm’s reach.

3. Stack Water Onto Habits You Already Have

New habits stick best when they piggyback on old ones. I sip after every bathroom trip, every email batch, every episode that ends.

Pick three things you already do every day and attach a sip to each. By dinner you have hit your goal without one boring “hydration session”.

My three anchors are breakfast, my lunch break, and my evening skincare routine. Sounds random, but they happen every single day, rain or shine, which is exactly the point.

4. Give It A Little Flavor, No Guilt

Plain water bored me to death too. Lemon, frozen berries, mint, or a splash of 100% juice changed everything for me.

Frozen fruit is my favorite trick, it works like cute little ice cubes. 🍓 On snacky evenings I also lean on my ways to stop late night cravings, because half of my “hunger” was thirst wearing a snack costume.

You do not need fancy sachets or a big grocery haul, honestly. Half a lemon, a few mint leaves from the windowsill, or three frozen strawberries turn a boring bottle into something I actually look forward to.

5. Eat Some Of Your Water

Hydration does not all come from a bottle, girls. Cucumber, watermelon, oranges, soups and yoghurt quietly top up your intake too.

On days when the bottle feels impossible, I just make my plate wetter. 🥒 A big salad or a bowl of soup and I am basically done for the day.

I cannot give you exact percentages, girls, and I will not pretend to. I just know from my own plate that on soup-and-salad days I never stress the bottle count, and my body can tell the difference.

6. Use A Sip Schedule For The First Week

I used to drink only when I felt thirsty, which is usually way too late. So for one week I set three phone alarms: mid-morning, mid-afternoon, early evening.

After seven days my body started asking for water on its own. The alarms can retire now. ⏰

A 700ml bottle helps here more than any app ever did. One bottle before lunch and two by dinner is a winning day in my book, no tracking spreadsheet required.

7. Check The Color, Skip The Math

You do not need an app or a formula to know if you are hydrated. Peek at the toilet, that is the whole test.

Pale, light yellow means you are doing great, keep going. Dark like apple juice is your cue to fill the bottle right now, babe.

Other signals I watch for are dry lips, afternoon headaches, and that stiff, tired feeling during warm up. When any of those show up, the bottle comes out before the workout starts.

8. Keep Evenings Gentle

Chugging a liter at 10pm is not the move, unless you enjoy three bathroom trips every night. I front-load my water before 7pm.

If dinner was salty or I trained late, I still sip, just slowly. Balance beats perfection, every time.

My evening wind down is a small mug of caffeine free herbal tea. It counts toward hydration and doubles as my signal that the kitchen is closed, cozy and practical.

Water Questions You Girls Keep Asking Me

How much water should I drink in a day?

My honest answer: it depends on your size, how much you sweat, and what your plate looks like. There is no magic number for everyone, but a handy starting point many girls use is about half your body weight in pounds, as ounces of water, then a bit more on training days.

I simply let the color check from habit 7 keep me honest.

Does coffee count toward my water intake?

Yes, it does, and I am delighted to report it. Coffee and tea still count as fluid, they just should not be your ONLY fluids.

My own balance is one or two coffees in the morning, water for everything after. Works like a charm.

Can you drink too much water?

You can, but it is rare and it takes chugging crazy amounts in one go. Sipping steadily through the day is the comfortable rhythm.

If you have kidney or heart issues, or take medication that affects your fluids, please loop your doctor in first. Your health comes first, always.

Now It’s Your Turn, Girl!

Pick ONE habit from this list, just one, and run it for a week. That is how this actually works. 🎯

Two years ago I rolled my eyes at girls with their giant bottles. Now I am that girl, dramatically attached to a straw bottle, and I feel SO much better for it.

I honestly cannot wait to hear which one you pick. Tell me in the comments, or come wave at me on Pinterest!

Till next time, girls! xo, Monica
