Let’s be real: Amazon has about a million pairs of leggings, and plenty of them turn see-through the second you squat.

I’ve been teaching group fitness classes every week for more than 25 years, and I spent 10 years selling healthy living products at QVC, so I know what separates workout clothes that last from ones that end up in the donate pile.

As a fitness expert in my 60s, I’m picky about what earns a spot in my drawer. I want a high waistband that stays put, fabric that’s squat-proof and breathes when a hot flash shows up uninvited (hello menopause), a bra with real support, and pockets for my phone. And yes, I want to look cute doing it!

The best part? You don’t have to spend a fortune to get all of that. As an Amazon influencer, I’m always on the hunt for affordable finds, and plenty of the trending activewear on Amazon right now holds its own against pricier brands. Flare leggings, quarter-zips, matching sets, pickleball skorts… they’re all there if you know what to look for.

So I sorted through what’s trending and pulled together the pieces that are actually worth your money for midlife women. Each category below has my picks, so you can skip the guesswork (and the returns).

Moral of the story? You don’t need to dress younger to feel great in your workout clothes. You just need pieces that fit the body you have today, hold up wash after wash, and don’t cost a fortune.

Leggings, Joggers, and Bottoms That Pass the Squat Test

If you can see through them when you bend over, they’re not worth your money, period. These bottoms have a high waistband that stays put and real pockets for your phone, and they’re comfy enough to wear from your workout to the grocery store.

High-Waisted Leggings

A wide, high waistband that stays put through squats and lunges (no tugging, no rolling down) is my number one non-negotiable in a pair of leggings. These are my absolute favorite!

Walking Shoes and Sneakers Worth the Hype

Your shoes are the foundation of every workout, so this is one place I never cut corners. These sneakers have real cushion and support, and they’re cute enough to wear with jeans when the workout’s over.

I love all three of these comfortable walking shoes from the same brand on Amazon. They’ve all replaced my Hoka’s!

My Favorite Walking Shoes

While I love all three pairs and switch between them, this is probably my favorite pair right now. It’s the most lightweight shoe I’ve tried, with max cushioning that reminds me of the Hoka Bondi and a rocker sole that keeps your stride smooth.

How to Shop for Activewear After 40: My Trainer Fit Checklist

Trends are fun, but fit is what keeps you wearing something. Before I add anything to my cart (and I do love to shop!), I run it through a quick checklist. Steal it for your next order.

  1. Do the squat test. Bend down in front of a mirror with good lighting. If you can see through the fabric, it’s going back.
  2. Check the waistband. Look for a wide, high-rise band that sits flat without digging in. If it rolls down when you bend over, it won’t make it through a workout.
  3. Look for pockets. Side pockets that actually hold a phone are a must for walking. A small back pocket for a key card is a bonus.
  4. Think about length. Seven-eighths leggings show a little ankle, while full-length pairs keep you warmer outdoors. Pick what fits your height and your season.
  5. Read the fabric tag. A nylon and spandex blend usually gives you that smooth, sculpted feel with stretch that bounces back.
  6. Move in it before the tags come off. Do a lunge, reach overhead, and twist side to side. Your clothes should move with you, not fight you.
  7. Ask yourself if you’d wear it out of the house. The pieces I reach for most are the ones that look good at the gym AND at the grocery store.

Activewear Fabrics 101: What Actually Works

Not all workout fabrics are created equal, and the tag can tell you a lot about how a piece will feel once you start sweating.

Nylon and spandex blends are the gold standard for leggings. They feel smooth, hold their shape, and offer that gentle compression so many of us love (hello tummy control).

Polyester shows up in a lot of tanks, tees, and sports bras. It’s lightweight, quick-drying, and durable, which makes it great for sweaty classes and hot summer walks.

Merino wool is a wonderful fall and winter layer. It’s soft, it helps regulate temperature, and it resists odor, so it’s perfect for chilly outdoor walks.

Cotton is soft and cozy, but it soaks up sweat and holds onto it. I save cotton for lounging, stretching, and easy days, not for a tough workout.

Brushed or buttery-soft fabrics feel amazing for yoga, Pilates, and errands, though they can pill faster with a lot of friction. Wash them gently and they’ll last.

If you’re in the middle of perimenopause or menopause and hot flashes are part of your daily life, look for words like “moisture-wicking,” “breathable,” and “quick-dry” on the label. Lightweight layers you can peel off fast are your best friend.

How to Style Activewear Beyond the Gym

I’m a big believer that activewear should earn its spot in your closet. The more ways you can wear a piece, the better the investment. Here are a few easy ways to take your workout clothes into the rest of your day.

  • Add a structured layer. Throw a denim jacket, a longline blazer, or a cozy shacket over leggings and a fitted top, and suddenly you’re ready for lunch.
  • Swap your sneakers. Trade running shoes for clean white sneakers, loafers, or ankle boots to make a set look more polished.
  • Go monochrome. Matching colors from head to toe look intentional and instantly chic, even if all you did was get dressed for a walk.
  • Use a long cardigan or a tunic. A longer layer adds coverage and looks great with flare leggings or wide-leg pants.
  • Accessorize lightly. A belt bag worn crossbody, a ball cap, a great pair of sunglasses, or simple gold hoops makes the whole look feel put together.
  • Keep a backup in the car. A quarter-zip tossed in the back seat covers a sweaty tank in two seconds flat.

How to Make Your Activewear Last Longer

A little care goes a long way for activewear. These simple habits help your favorite pieces keep their shape and stretch.

  • Wash in cold water, inside out, and zip any zippers so they don’t snag other pieces.
  • Skip the fabric softener. It can coat performance fabrics and keep them from wicking sweat the way they’re designed to.
  • Hang or lay flat to dry whenever you can, since high heat from the dryer can break down spandex over time.
  • Wash sweaty clothes soon after your workout instead of leaving them balled up in your gym bag.
  • Use a mesh laundry bag for sports bras so straps and clasps stay in good shape.
  • Rotate your favorites. Giving pieces a rest between wears helps the stretch recover.

When to Replace Your Sports Bras and Sneakers

This is the part nobody wants to hear, but your gear wears out, even if it still looks fine from the outside.

With sports bras, the signs are easy to spot once you know them. The band feels loose, the straps keep slipping, the fabric has lost its stretch, or you just don’t feel as supported during jumping jacks as you used to. Your body changes too, so it’s smart to get refitted every so often, especially through menopause.

Sneakers are sneakier. The cushioning breaks down long before the shoes look worn out. Check the tread on the bottom, look for creasing in the midsole, and pay attention to your body. If your feet, knees, or hips start feeling achy after walks that used to feel easy, your shoes may be telling you they’re done.

Read this twice: your activewear is equipment. Treat it like the tool it is, and it’ll take care of you on every walk, every class, and every lifting session.

Activewear FAQs for Women Over 40

Can you wear leggings after 50?

Absolutely! Wear what makes you feel good in your skin. If you want a little more coverage, pair them with a longer tank, a tunic, or a quarter-zip. There’s no age limit on comfy, flattering leggings.

What should I wear to a strength training class?

Go for leggings or fitted pants that won’t catch on a bench, a supportive sports bra, and a top that lets you move your arms freely. Flat, stable sneakers are better than super cushy running shoes for lifting, because they keep you grounded.

What’s the best activewear for hot flashes?

Look for lightweight, moisture-wicking, quick-dry fabrics and dress in layers you can take off fast. A breathable tank under a zip-up gives you options when the heat hits out of nowhere.

How many pieces of activewear do I really need?

Start where you are. A few pairs of leggings or pants you love, two or three supportive sports bras, a handful of tops, one great layer, and a good pair of sneakers will cover most weeks. Build from there as you figure out what you reach for most.

Feel Good in What You Move In

You don’t need a closet full of trendy workout clothes to get strong, but having a few pieces you love makes it so much easier to show up. When you feel confident in what you’re wearing, you move more, you stand taller, and you’re more likely to get that workout in. So pick a category or two that fits your life right now, try something new, and keep going.

PS. All of these Amazon finds are also saved on my Amazon storefront, so you can shop them in one place.
